We Are International

Ida (America) and Andrew (UK)
We work together in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. Andrew is from
the UK and Ida is from America.

We Are International

Balawyn (Australia) and Jess (UK)
We met when she came to the UK to Nottingham Uni on exchange from Australia.
She stayed in my halls and is a fellow Law student (some years older).
During my first semester, she really was my rock. She was helping me with my
law stresses as a fresher and offering me any help in anticipation of my
tutorials and exams. She has also just been an amazing friend, who is the
first I can honestly say I felt truly valued having me as a friend and
having me around. It was upsetting for me that she was only around for a
semester, and obviously living in England means there is quite a huge
distance between our two countries. It's expensive, and I know I won't see
her for a while (unless I get onto a summer school or similar scheme). We
still keep in touch, and are both involved in the 100 Happy Days (see the
website) scheme in order to keep each other up to date with what we've been
upto even when we can't chat due to the time difference. I am so lucky to
have made such a valuable friend, and really hope we stay in touch. While we
won't see each other for a while, and she has already been gone this second
semester, I still feel she is one of my closest friends from Uni to date and
I'm so glad I was so-placed to meet her as she is truly an outstanding and
inspiring individual / role model.

Nikki, Mavis and Lynn (China)
We are Nikki, Mavis and Lynn (from left to right) and we are all from China.
We met each other because we were in the same course CCI Management in 2012.
Then we became very good friends.
We went to class together, we went shopping together. We also cook together sometimes as we cannot do it everyday because we live in different flats or house.
We share happiness and sadness with each other. With out such good friends we would feel lonely during this master year.
This picture was taken on our graduation ceremony on 16 January 2014.
It's lucky that we just got our seats near each other!!! That made it possible to take this picture and make it a better memory for us.
Thank you my friends, thank you the University of Sheffield!!!!!!!!!!! :)

This is my selfie. This is me and 4 of the other Sabbatical Officers from 2000-2001. Sadly I didn't have a good photo of all 8 of us. An amazing group of people that I loved working with and was proud to call my friends. Our experiences, backgrounds and friendship helped us in our work together for the Union. We're still friends today although we don't see each other as much as we'd like partly due to the fact that we live in Wales, Cyprus, Belgium, Malawi and Sheffield. I wouldn't be the person I am without these friends (and the other 3 not pictured) and that was all possible by coming together at University of Sheffield.

We Are International

Hyunju (Korean), Pooja (Indian) and Christian (Mexican)
We were grads from the Architecture Dept. at the Uni. The three of us being in different courses (ie. MA Architectural Design, M.Arch Sustainable Architecture Studies, M.Sc Computer Aided Environment Design respectively).

Thanks to diversity and activeness of the Uni and school we managed to bump into each other at a lot of the organized event and did manage to travel a lot together too...which in turn brought us close.

Now even though we're miles apart we are still in touch reminiscing about the fun times in Sheffield.

Matt (UK) and Siung (Malaysia)
We are Matt (UK) and Siung (Malaysia). We met nearly two years ago and it took a few months before we could even understand each others accents. Our friends say we have a 'bromance' because we are always arguing like a married couple! I (Matt) have been teaching Siung about British culture and bought him his first fish and chips whilst Siung has inspired me to go travelling all over the world. My time as a student wouldn't have been as enjoyable and rewarding without Siung.

Omar: I have known Jay for three years, we all come from different parts of the world (Morocco, Kenya, Jordan...) and I have only just met Jude and Mira. One of the most amazing things about being here at University is that you get to meet so many international people, and this is probably one of the main reasons why I chose England and more specifically Sheffield. This World Week at the University has been absolutely amazing and there is much more to come! We all cannot wait!

He is always so upbeat in everything he does, loves to get involved and puts a smile on our faces; our University experiences simply just wouldn't be the same without him. We Are International

Christopher (UK), Megan (Canada), Dave (Canada) & Michael (Texas)

Back in 2007 the term 'selfie' didn't exist
but this was a photo taken in the middle of the night at the leaving party held for my three dear friends Megan and Dave (both Canadian and on the left) and Michael (from Texas and on the right).

During 2006/07 they were studying here while I was in my third year and we quickly became firm friends; we travelled around the UK together to sightsee in places like Edinburgh where I gained a perspective of how England is perceived around the world; I cooked Thanksgiving dinner for them when they were away from their families; they invited me to an International Student party that was held during the Easter break and I had a chance to reflect that, of all of the
places in the world they could have travelled to study...they had
picked Sheffield.
I was amazed that anybody had really ever heard of it, much less considered it but, as they reminded me, *I'd* picked Sheffield too.

Anyway, I was incredibly fortunate to do something that few of my fellow students seem to do and get to know all kinds of people from different countries; some like the UK and some totally different. It's a shame that even fewer people may get that opportunity in the future.

We Are International

Jasmine (Singapore) & Sara (Sri Lanka)

We Are International

Hardik (India) & Ben (UK)

We Are International

Dorathy (Hong Kong) & Lucy (UK)
On the left of the photo is Dorathy from Hong Kong and on the right is me, Lucy from the UK.

Dorathy studied Environmental Science with my housemate Mel and so, when we found ourselves with a spare room in our house, we asked Dorathy to move in with us. We quickly became best friends as we found that we had a lot in common, but also that our friendship allowed us to share the different cultures that we had grown up with.

When we graduated from our undergraduate degrees in 2012, Dorathy had to return to Hong Kong. I miss her, but we still talk all the time and she remains one of my closest friends.

My friendship with Dorathy is definitely one of the many defining experiences that life at The University of Sheffield has given me and if she hadn't been able to afford to study in Britain my time as a student would be notably different. International friendships are a rich part of university life and one of the most illuminating ways to experience different cultures and difference in general.

We Are International

Harrie (UK) and Sheryl (Singapore)
We try not to smile nicely in pictures!

We Are International

Elena (Mexico) and Katie (UK)
Dr Katie Edwards and I met at a public engagement event and although our disciplines could not be more different (biblical studies and mechanical engineering!) we found a common interest; our passion for inclusion and diversity. Much more importantly, Katie has become one of my best friends in the whole wide world. Being so far away from Mexico, my home country, my family and friends, having Katie's friendship and support gives me strength to do my work to the best of my abilities and be a happier person. Thank you Katie!

Here's a contribution from two doctoral researchers at the Institute of Work Psychology (Management School). The picture is taken in the hallway of our office, where we have a map pinpointing where all the doctoral researchers in the office are from!
You have Stephen (on the left) and Addy (on the right). Stephen is from the UK, and Addy is from Bulgaria. We met as we're both in the second years of our PhDs at the IWP, and we share an office (albeit a slightly crazy one - note the bear ears).
Addy and Stephen regularly bond over wine and chocolate and have today been working together on an MSc lecture on "innovative technologies in research methods" - exciting, huh?

Azadeh (Iran) and Tamara (Germany)
Tamara:
I'm from Germany and am lucky to have Azadeh, who is from Iran, not only as my colleague, but as my friend. Azadeh is one of the most generous people I know and she always treats me to some Iranian specialities which she buys in her specialist shops - mini cucumbers, fruit I hadn't come across before and other strange but (mostly) very tasty things....(with one exception...). I've also gained some insight into her culture and it's just great to have a friend and colleague who I can have a lot of fun and laughs with, and because we are both open minded, any cultural differences we may have, are an enrichment rather than pose a problem :-)
Azadeh :
I am so fortunate to have this opportunity to work with such a lovely colleague who was born in Germany and now living in the UK. I am trying to learn German (I am hopeless in learning new language!) but found out that some of the words they use, we already use them in Farsi, like autobahn - Her bubbly personality makes it easy for me to discuss and talk about each other’s culture and have a good laugh about it.
I learnt and still learning from her not only work-wise but life-wise too. She was my mentor at work, patiently answered my questions even when she was very busy.
Not only she is very kind and generous, she is very funny and I love her sense of humour. Her friendship is priceless to me....

My assigned language partner never got in touch, so Yoon (who was friends with my friend’s language partner) offered to be mine. We've been friends ever since. It’s interesting learning about Korea, only the other day he was telling me how different Christmas is in Korea and how you spend the day out with friends compared to with family at home in the UK.

I love Lizzy because she's funny, open minded, trustworthy, and smart; she's a laugh when drunk and you can always count on her.
Lizzy: Sarah is very thoughtful, caring, and intelligent. She has a similar sense of humour to me and she makes me laugh. She is a good listener, very liberal, genuine, honest and frank. She’s super cute, and she does this funny snort when she laughs. I guess we are similar and have similar things to say about each other.
